TEA CULTURE: DARJEELING & KALIMPONG
Darjeeling Kalimpong Glenburn Tea Estate Buddhist culture Exquisite cuisine India Acme Voyages
The high elevation of the twin towns of Darjeeling and Kalimpong make the air cool and refreshing. Drive up into the mountains or better yet, take the historic narrow gauge railway and alight in Darjeeling. Against a gorgeous vista of the mountains, take a short drive through the rolling countryside to arrive at Glenburn Tea Estate. This historic tea plantation has been converted into a delightfully charming experience for those who want to learn more about Indian tea, it’s history and it’s culture. The British were the ones who saw the enormous potential of these hilly slopes and imported the first tea bushes from China into India, where they’ve flourished ever since.
Both Kalimpong and Darjeeling are also cradles of Buddhist culture and have a large Tibetan Buddhist population that resides here. Several monasteries and stupas dot the landscape. The region is ideal for long walks in the countryside, a tour of the tea estates, and relaxing in the gentle warmth of mountain sunshine and fresh air. The food is exquisite - a unique blend of Bengali cuisine infused with touches of Tibet and Anglo-Indian recipes. Situated in the heart of nature, the area is excellent for birding and wildlife. Picnics by the river or a cup of tea in the estate gardens are simply idyllic.
