ART & HISTORY - AJANTA & ELLORA
Ajanta Ellora Magnificent Rock Carved Caves Temples Monastries Hinduism Buddhism Jainism Wall murals Daulatabad Fort Aurangabad India
Ajanta and Ellora are ancient ruins of magnificent rock carved caves, temples, monasteries and shrines. Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism are the major influences. Magnificent wall murals, carved sculptures and rock carved murals make this one of the most awe-inspiring pieces of cultural heritage in India. The magnificent stupas of Ajanta are really breathtaking and as you walk through the maze of tunnels and caves, you will be amazed at every turn!
While visiting Ajanta and Ellora, a short side trip into the centre of Aurangabad is worth a visit. The ethereal Bibi ka Maqbara was Emperor Aurangzeb's contribution to Mughal architecture and is said to mimic the Taj Mahal in it's style and beauty. The imposing Daulatabad Fort is also worth a visit. But Aurangabad is equally famous for it's incredible textile heritage. This is the epicentre of the world renown Paithani and Himroo weaves. A Paithani sari is a much sought after heirloom and is often passed down from one generation to the next. Himroo is a lighter weave - a blend of silk and cotton, which is also very beautiful and a worthy take away
