Beyond Bhutan's Golden Triangle - Paro, Thimphu, Punakha - lies Bumthang. Lush and lovely, Bumthang is one of the most historic districts in Bhutan. It has some of the oldest and culturally richest Dzongs and several sacred sights. This "sacred valley" actually consists of four distinct valleys - Ura, Chumey, Tang and Choekhor. Bumthang means a beautiful meadow or field in the local Bhutanese language. The people of Bumthang have their own distinct language called Bumthangkha, but each valley have their own dialect. The Jambay Temple also known as the Temple of Maitreya is in Bumthang. According to a local legend, It is one of 108 temples that were built in a single day by Songtsen Gampo, a Tibetan King, in order to slay an ogress who was ravaging his kingdom. Bumthang is an excellent add on and can be reached by road from Thimphu. Ready to explore Bhutan? Send us a message today
