ARTISTIC TOUCH: ORISSA
Orissa Patchitra Legends of Radha-Krishna Panchatantra Ikkat India Acme Voyages
The eastern state of Orissa is one of the oldest parts of the Indian Subcontinent. This is a region that is rich in ancient customs and traditions, especially when it comes to the arts and crafts. “Patchitra” is an age-old art form. Artisans painstakingly create intricate hand carved stories on scrolls made from palm leaves. The stories usually depict religious themes such as the legends of Radha and Krishna, or animalistic themes from the Panchatantra and Jataka fables. Each individually designed scroll is a work of art. Orissa is also home to several other forms of painting, sculpture and textile art. Silver filigree work, brass sculptures, sand sculptures, embroidery and appliqué, Santhal paintings, coir crafts, papier-mâché, and Ikkat weaves are just a few of the amazing genres of craftsmanship in the state.
