If you like your culture to have a strong architectural accent along with some superb flavours, then head to Chettinad in Tamil Nadu. This region is known for it's magnificent old mansions - some of which have now been turned into public spaces like museums and hotels. These magnificent bungalows were not just beautiful, they were also sustainable. Stunning carved doors, Burma teak pillars, Italian marble and Spanish tile embellish these mansions. A mixture of eggwhite and lime coats the walls of many of these old homes, making them look like new, keeping them cool during the blazing summer heat and several homes had rain water harvesting systems incorporated into the old world architecture. Enjoy a fabulous feast of deliciously spiced meats, poultry, vegetables, lentils and rice. The Chettiars are known for their mastery in the kitchen and the first thing you will notice when you walk into a Chettiar home is the aroma of home-cooking. Meander through these lovely towns and enjoy a couple of days soaking in this rich architectural and culinary legacy.
