TAKING IT EASY - SLOW TRAVEL IN SRI LANKA
Diwali Lord Rama Ravana Sri Lanka Anuradhapura Sigiriya Acme Voyages
As we celebrate Diwali this week, we find ourselves in Lanka - the land of the demon god Ravana, who features prominently in the Diwali legend. Lord Rama rescued his beautiful wife Sita from his clutches and defeats the ten-headed Ravana. Diwali commemorates this victory and the return of Lord Rama as the king of Ayodhya.
But as we find ourselves in the Emerald Isle this week, the demons are far from our mind. This beautiful island really has it all - and we can’t get enough of it. From fantastic wildlife to an ancient Hindu and Buddhist cultural heritage. As the last rain showers shed their drops over the Indian Ocean, the sun makes an appearance over the horizon for some of the most romantic and mesmerising sunsets you’ve ever seen. A paradise where you can fall in love all over again... and again.
We fell in love (again) with Sri Lankan cuisine. If you’re a seafood aficionado, you might not want to leave. But if you’re vegetarian or vegan, Sri Lanka has plenty of options for you too! Discover Sri Lanka’s ancient history and archaeological heritage in Anuradhapura, Polonnawa, Dambule and Sigirya. Then head to the High Country, and the bustling town of Kandy - rich in folklore and Buddhist traditions. Wind down through the tea-gardens while staying in gorgeous old world tea bungalows amid lush natural surroundings. Stop en route at one of Sri Lanka’s beautiful wildlife parks to see leopards, birds, and several other species. Then make your way down to the south coast to relax and unwind along the shores of the Indian Ocean and the beaches of Mirissa, Hikkeduwa, Unawatuna and Galle. Explore Portuguese and Dutch colonial heritage in Galle Fort. Then head back up to Colombo for a couple of nights out on the town, before you fly home. If you’re looking for paths less trodden, head into the wilds of Willipatu, over the east coast to the beaches of Nilaveli and Uppaveli, surf the waves off Arugam Bay, or head north to Jaffna.
At the end of the day, if you’re looking for a relaxed, revitalising tropical getaway (at exceptional value!) then this is the time to drop us a line or pick up the phone and plan your journey to Sri Lanka today!
