The surprise of finding such a wide, flat valley without trees after the hard climb through dense forests is enhanced by a sense of immense space and an extremely rare experience in Bhutan, where most valleys are tightly confined. A few kilometers beyond the Gangtey monastery, at the bottom of the valley is the village of Phobjikha. This place is the winter home of black-necked cranes that migrate from the arid plains of the north to spend the winter in a milder and milder climate. Phobjikha, at an altitude of 2900 m, lies below the Wangdiphodrang district and is on the outskirts of Black Mountain National Park. The valley is home to two beautiful winding rivers, Nakay Chhu (Chhu Naap Black Waters) and Gay Chhu (Chhu Karp White Waters). According to a local legend, the two rivers actually represent a snake and a wild boar. The two animals once clashed with the agreement that if the snake (Nakay Chhu) had won, the Phobjikha Valley would be able to grow rice, but if the wild boar won, rice could never be grown in the area. The snake has lost since it had to sneak through its journey. Rice cannot be grown in the valley even today. Black-necked Crane Information Center (closed on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays) Located at the edge of the forest and wetland along the main road of Phobjikha Valley, the information center has an observation room to detect the best view of the cranes. The center also offers exhibit information that describes the natural and cultural history of the area. There is a small souvenir shop that sells handicrafts produced by the local people. Gangtey was founded by Pema Trinley, the grandson of Pema Lingpa, the famous Nyingmapa saint of Bhutan. In 1613, Pema Trinley established the monastery and became the first Gangtey Tulku.
